If you want to make the most of your trip to North America, then a fly-drive holiday is just the thing. You can discover the freedom of the open road, while still being able to visit several places in one trip. Your itinerary can be moulded exactly to fit your requirements and you can be sure that you’ll fit in everything you want to see and do.
The roads are wide and well sign-posted, while the fuel is considerably cheaper than UK prices as well, so you won’t have to worry about eating into your spending money along the way. The only question that remains is where you will head off to.
The USA has so much to offer, that a fly-drive holiday is one of the most popular types of trip to take. It goes without saying that Route 66 is one of the best-selling fly-drives and it suits many different people. Heading through several different states, the road will take you on a journey through drastically different cultures and climates, giving you a real taste of the true USA.
If you want something a bit different, try the California Coast tour. Grab the suncream and rent a convertible to make the most of the sunshine down Highway 1. You can stop off along the way to indulge in some watersports or whale watching. Or why not do something a little different and book a tour of one of the vineyards and wineries scattered along the coast? You can have an action-packed adventure trip with visits to sites like Alcatraz and Pier 59, or have a tranquil break relaxing on the beaches of Santa Barbara, simply whiling away the hours.
Of course, the north west has plenty to offer as well. From the rugged, stunning coastlines of Washington to the mountains of Colorado, these somewhat lesser talked about states have plenty to offer and will give you absolutely breathtaking scenery along the way. If you’re into hiking and the great outdoors, a fly-drive holiday to the American north-west is simply a must-do.
The other side to North America is of course, Canada. Sister to the USA, this stunning country is often overlooked for fly-drive holidays. However, much like the United States, Canada has plenty to offer and isn’t afraid to share. Canada fly-drive holidays give you the opportunity to experience a bit more of what’s on offer and really embrace the laid-back Canadian way.
As well as being great value for money, Canada has some beautiful national parks that are just waiting to be explored. The snow-capped mountain ranges, glassy lakes and picturesque log cabins offer a vision of the perfect wintery getaway. However, you don’t want to forget the bustling, cosmopolitan cities that have some unique sites of their own to offer.
Head to Vancouver for a busy city break and then hit the road out to Victoria for some whale watching. If you’re extra lucky, you may get the experience of seeing orca in their natural habitat, along with a whole range of other marine life.
Banff doesn’t often come up as a popular holiday destination, but it’s worth a visit and makes a great stop along the way. A tour of British Columbia and Alberta will see you stop to catch your breath in Banff, the perfect location for river rafting on Lake Minnewanka. You’ll want to drive through Glacier National Park and be sure to have your camera ready; this route will give you some pictures you really will want to keep forever.
If you choose a fly-drive holiday to North America, you will want to think carefully about your vehicle hire. You have the option of either renting a car and booking accommodation along the way or going even more simply with a motorhome and just hitting the road. Each option opens up different possibilities, so it’s worth taking the time to work out what you would prefer and also which destinations you’re keen to stop at.
A motorhome means you can factor in extra stops along the way if you want to. There’s every chance that you’ll fall in love with one particular destination and want to spend a few more days there, so the motorhome will give you the perfect opportunity to do just that. Of course, with a car, you can experience good old fashioned American hospitality and get to know the locals in each city you stop in. If you’re feeling brave, consider a Harley Davidson holiday in the middle of your fly-drive trip, giving you a unique opportunity to see the country from a totally different perspective. Whatever you choose, you’re guaranteed an amazing holiday.

"Hands down, my favourite fly-drive holiday was the Cool California Coast Touralong scenic Highway 1. Each of the seaside towns we visited were lively and great fun. I loved watching the surfers, I even did a bit of whale watching. Starting the tour with a stay on the Queen Mary was fascinating, when I got to San Francisco I didn't want it to end, so I carried on up the coast and spent a few days in Northern California too."

"One of my favourite fly-drive holidays is our Contrasting Utah and Colorado tour. The mix of the lush, Colorado alpine scenery with the flaming desert colours of Utah is amazing. I'm a big cowboy and western fan, so I loved my stay in Gouldings Lodge in Monument Valley. In your room you can watch movies of the famous westerns filmed in this area!"

"Over my years here I've clocked up visits to 42 states, my most memorable trip was our Oregon and Washington Tour. I loved the miles and miles of wilderness, the rugged coast with its uncrowded beaches and the lack of Brits (!) But the highlight was Crater Lake National Park, I will never forget the view from the terrace of the historic Crater Lake Lodge. I stayed here for a couple of nights and spent most of my time sitting on the terrace and taking in the jaw-dropping views over the incredible crater....it was magical."

Amanda Davies North America Expert The Best of the West fly-drive holiday will always be dear to me as it was my first trip to America. I remember standing on the edge of the Grand Canyon and thinking WOW, I'm never going back to Majorca again! This journey really opened my eyes to what the country had to offer and I've been hooked since.

The Grand West Tour fly-drive holiday is the one for me as it includes all my favourite places in the USA.....Yosemite National Park, Mammoth Lakes, Palm Springs and Vegas! I love the fact that I can be up a mountain skiing in the morning and by the afternoon I can be strolling along the Vegas Strip or swimming in a plush pool in any number of the chic hotels in Palm Springs. When I book this fly drive for clients I always recommend that they extend their stay and spend time in Lake Tahoe too.
"Route 66 definitely needs to be on the "have to do before you die" list. The slices of Americana, the open road and 8 states - there is just no fly drive that gives you the same glimpse into life in the US. I recommend the Deluxe Tour , but am happy to tailor make to suit your own needs." I did it by RV!
"You've got to check out the hotels on our Fairmont Experience Tour fly-drive holiday of eastern Canada. I couldn't believe I was staying in 5 star hotels for the price of 3 star! My favourite city on this tour was Quebec, I loved strolling around old town in the evening. During the fly-drive holiday I even had time to take in thundering Niagara Falls and whale watching in Tadoussac. I'm a secret snob, I loved returning to my luxurious hotel each evening.."
