Accessible via scenic ferry ride from North Eleuthera Island, Harbour Island, was deemed "The Best Island in the Caribbean" by Travel & Leisure magazine in 2005 and boasts lush tropical greenery and magical pink sand beaches. It is a haven for the rich and famous, including Bill Gates, Mariah Carey and Harrison Ford who happily get around the three-mile long island by golf cart just as all visitors do.
Harbour Island is famous for the pink sand beaches stretching along the eastern shore. The pink hue comes from a microscopic organism called a foraminifera which has a reddish-pink shell. If a beach has a large population of them and just the right currents - voila, you get pink sand! It's extraordinarily beautiful and definitely worth the trip.
The island's main town, Dunmore Town, is a delightful cluster of narrow streets lined by clapboard houses festooned with bougainvillea. Stroll along Bay Street and enjoy a chilled beverage overlooking crystal clear waters.
For a bit of history, visit Loyalist Cottage, a wonderful example of loyalist architecture. Also worth a mooch is Commissioner’s Residence built in 1913, St. John’s Anglican Church built in 1768 and Chapel Street cemetery's ancient graves. A hidden 17th century battery, built by the English to defend the island, can be found at the southern end of Bay Street.
