Sixty miles south of Denver lies Colorado Springs, the state’s second biggest city. Nearby Manitou Springs, a spa and artists colony, with its galleries and traffic-free streets, is also a delight, and the place where you’ll board the cog railway up Pikes Peak.

Visit the 18,000 acre campus of the US Air Force Academy and the US Olympic Complex-both are free.  Discover wilder places: Cheyenne Mountain State Park, Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, the jagged rocks of Garden of the Gods and the huge Cave of Winds.
