Days 1-2 : Depart San Francisco
Discover the attractions of this beautiful city by foot, by cable car or the superb BART system. See places like Union Square, The Presidio, Golden Gate Bridge, China Town, Pier 39 and Fisherman’s Wharf. Catch a glimpse of the infamous Alcatraz across the bay.
Day 3 : Santa Rosa, California
Distance: 55 miles
Just 55 miles north of San Francisco, you’ll find a vibrant city overflowing with all you love about California. Welcome to Santa Rosa, where everything comes together. Wine country and farm country, redwood forests and rivers, lakes and ocean. In the centre, the charming, thriving downtown lined with intriguing shops and restaurants. Whether you’re into wine tasting, spas, golf or superb scenery you can have it all in Santa Rosa.
Day 4 : Eureka
Distance: 220 miles
Travel up the scenic California coast to Eureka, where you will see the Carson Mansion, the most photographed example of Victorian architecture in the world and once the home of a West Coast lumber baron. Keep an eye out for whales as you cruise along the coast.
Day 5-6 : Crater Lake, Oregon
Distance: 380 miles
Today travel from Eureka to Crater Lake via the Shasta National Forest. Majestic Mt. Shasta is considered an active volcano. Located near the southern extent of the Cascade Mountain Range in North Central California, Mt. Shasta rises to an impressive 14,162 feet and dominates the view for miles around. Diverse features include expansive lava flows, seven active glaciers, sub alpine meadows with a variety of plants, and dense forest below the 8,000 foot tree line.
The mountain is a popular destination for climbers and has historic and contemporary importance for Native Americans. Continue to Crater Lake, no place else on earth combines a deep, pure lake, so blue in colour, sheer surrounding cliffs, almost two thousand feet high, two picturesque islands and a violent volcanic past. It is a place of immeasurable beauty, and an outstanding outdoor laboratory and classroom.
Crater Lake is located in Southern Oregon on the crest of the Cascade Mountain range, 100 miles east of the Pacific Ocean. It lies inside a caldera, or volcanic basin, created when the 12,000 foot high Mount Mazama collapsed 7,700 years ago following a large eruption.
At 1,943 feet deep is the seventh deepest lake in the world and the deepest in the United States.
Day 7-8 : Gold Beach, Oregon
Distance: 242 miles
Situated in the splendour of Oregon's Southern Coast and in the heart of America's Wild Rivers Coast, Gold Beach is a perfect central point from which to do and see a number of activities in the area.
Gold Beach is considered the heart of America's Wild Rivers Coast for its proximity to all of the rivers. No fewer than eight major rivers and dozens of creeks run to meet the ocean along the Wild Rivers Coast. Steelhead and salmon share local waters with drift boats, canoes, kayaks and jet boats. The part of the coast line is dotted with quaint small towns and deserted, rugged sandy beaches.
Day 9 : Newport, Oregon
Distance: 178 miles
Newport located on the central Oregon coast and has been a favourite tourist destination since the 1860s. The small, succulent Yaquina Bay oyster made Newport world famous and a popular destination for seafood lovers. Now commercially grown, visitors can buy the oysters and watch them being processed at the Oregon Oyster Company.
Day 10 : Portland, Oregon
Distance: 100 miles
On to Portland, known as the City of Roses. Straddling a river, festooned with beautiful parks and gardens, and within close proximity to mountains, ocean and desert, a stay in Portland offers far more than a holiday in most urban environments.
This green city is also a flourishing centre for the arts, and boasts one of the best public transport systems in the country. Portland is a sophisticated city catering for those who enjoy fine food, café culture and strolling through sensational gardens and parks
Day 11-12 : Mount Rainier National Park
Distance: 150 miles
Mount Rainier contains vast expanses of pristine old-growth forests, sub alpine flower meadows and spectacular alpine scenery. The glacier clad Mountain is the highest peak in the Cascades and is also said to be one of the most awesome mountains in the world.
Days 13-14 : Seattle
Distance: 109 miles
Seattle has one of the most scenic settings in America, curved around the shore of Elliott Bay, with Lake Washington behind and the snowy peak of Mount Rainier hovering faintly in the distance. With glass skyscrapers gleaming across the bay the city combines its superb natural surrounding with a modern skyline.
Day 15 : Depart Seattle
Today you leave Washington behind and head for home, or perhaps you want to stay longer? Extend your trip and head to Canada to explore Vancouver or visit the stunning Cascades Mountains.
