Glacier National Park
Two thousand lakes and a thousand miles of rivers, threading between thick forests and glorious meadows, weave a blue-and-green carpet below the tightly packed peaks of Glacier National Park-a home for big horn sheep, mountain goats, black bears, grizzlies, wolves and mountain lions. Though the park still holds fifty small glaciers, its name comes from the fact that these immense valleys were carved by huge flows of ice, millions of years ago.
People flock to Glacier National Park to experience the Going to the Sun Road, this fifty mile road winds from west to east and creates the illusion that you’ll be climbing forever. After a stealthy ascent of the foothills, when the road appears to be heading straight into the huge bare mountain that fills the entire windscreen, each successive hairpin confronts you with a new colossus.
At the east end of ten-mile Lake McDonald, the road starts to climb in earnest. Snowmelt from waterfalls gushes across the, spilling over the sheer drops on the other side. The winding route nudges over the Continental Divide at Logan Pass (6680ft) towards Jackson Glacier and towards the east gate. This magnificent journey ends at the start of the Great Plains, which stretch 1600 miles to the east. You won’t be surprised to hear that this is considered one of the most scenic drives in the world!
You’ll love the boating trips available on all the large lakes in the park, including the unforgettable sunset cruises on Lake McDonald and St Mary Lake.
Glacier combines with the adjacent , much smaller, Waterton Lakes National Park on the border of USA/Canada to form Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park. Not as impressive as Glacier National Park, but still stunning nonetheless.
