Days 1 - 3 Atlanta
Spend your first 3 nights of this Georgia Discovery in Atlanta.
Atlanta is a city of the future born of the elegant sophistication of the past. A place where breaking news is broadcast around the globe by mighty CNN and yet where the Southern style of Gone With The Wind is at its very core. A must see is ' The High Museum of Art' in Atlanta where the Terracotta Soldiers exhibit is from 16th November 2008 - 26th April 2009.
There are 55 wandering Downtown Ambassadors who walk the streets at hand to help you make the most of this city - how inviting is that!? For a feel of the old days, start at the Atlanta History Centre in the upmarket Buckhead district. Fascinating exhibits take you from railroad town to modern days and explain why the Civil War happened.
Visit the Margaret Mitchell House and Museum. Marvel at how the author created her romantic Civil War epic Gone With The Wind in her dark basement flat, goggle at film memorabilia and enjoy the exhibits.
Created in Atlanta in 1886, Coca-Cola's status as a cultural icon is mapped out in the World of Coca Cola. Here you can sample Cola product from around the world.
Don't miss the State Capitol building, similar to the one in Washington, or for a more up to date activity, visit the CNN Centre and tour behind the scenes of this ground breaking news channel.
Fancy a stroll? walking around the neighbourhoods is a great way to get to know Atlanta...Buckhead, the "Beverly Hills of the South" is full of posh houses and even posher shops. Virginia Highland has lots of nicely renovated homes while elegant, magnolia tree-filled Druid Hills was the backdrop in the movie Driving Miss Daisy.
Historically Atlanta is fascinating. This is where you'll find the final resting place of civil rights leader Dr Martin Luther King. Visit his birthplace, a National Historic Site, and his church. The city has endless museums and galleries.
Nightlife is centred around several districts and boasts over 8,000 restaurants!
Outside the city, one of the area's biggest attractions is Stone Mountain Park. The 825ft granite outcrop depicts the Confederate heroes and is larger than Mt Rushmore. Fancy a spot of music? Visit the Georgia Hall of Fame in Macon, where more than 450 Georgian musicians are honoured including Ray Charles, Gladys Knight, Otis Redding, Little Richard, Travis Tritt and R.E.M.
Or if you are a big Gone With The Wind fan head off to Clayton County South of Atlanta and visit Jonesboro, a not-to-be-missed town for movie lovers and those wanting a true feel of the" Deep South". Jonesboro was the setting for Margaret Mitchell's acclaimed novel, and later film. Come see the local historic plantation houses and learn about the real people that inspired Ms Mitchell.
