Meteor Crater, Route 66 - Arizona
Fascinating Meteor Crater is located only 35 miles east of Flagstaff and 20 miles west of Winslow, Arizona. The meteorite was believed to be 50 metres wide and to weigh over 300,000 tons when it came crashing down to earth over 50,000 years ago.
The site was formerly known as the Canyon Diablo Crater, and scientists generally refer to it as Barringer Crater in honor of Daniel Barringer who was first to suggest that it was produced by meteorite impact. The crater owners proclaim it to be "the first proven meteorite crater on earth."
Today, Meteor Crater is nearly one mile across, 2.4 miles in circumference and more than 550 feet deep. To put this size of this place in perspective, twenty football games on 20 football fields could be played at the same time on the floor of the Crater, whilst two million spectators watched from its rocky slopes!
It is an international tourist venue with outdoor observation trails, air conditioned indoor viewing, wide screen movie theatre, interactive discovery centre, and Astronaut Memorial Park at the modern Visitor Centre located on the crater rim.
