Beaufort was established in 1710, and became a haven for wealthy families who had made their fortunes from the flourishing cotton and tobacco industries. Many of their stunning antebellum houses still stand today and it is possible to take a tour of some of these amazing survivors of both the the War of Independence and the Civil War.
