The Florida Keys and the incredible Overseas Highway
The Overseas Highway, connecting the mainland of Florida to the Keys, is a one-of-a-kind driving experience. Stretching 113 miles, predominantly over water, it ends in the USA's most southern point - Key West. Construction of the highway was an incredible feat of engineering. It wasn't just building the roadway, and the masses of concrete and steel, but the 42 overseas bridges needed to connect the islands. That includes the iconic Seven Mile Bridge – the largest segmental bridge in the world which connects the middle and lower keys.

Days 1- 2 : South Beach, Miami
After your flight across the pond, there's no better place to unwind, relax and slip into that holiday mood, than sunny South Beach, Miami.
When you're not sunning yourself on the golden sands, sipping a cocktail in one of the fashionable street cafes, or mooching around the stylish boutiques, we suggest you hop on a schooner for a sail around the harbour, enjoy an Art Deco tour or visit Little Havana for a strong cuban coffee and a large cigar. If you adore people watching, you're in the right place. Roller skating babes, hunky dudes and some of America's most flamboyant creatures strut their stuff along Ocean Drive.
Days 3 - 4 : Key Largo, The Upper Florida Keys
Your Florida Keys adventure begins. Collect your car from Miami, may we suggest a convertible, and hit the road! Driving south from mainland Florida, it's easy to understand why the southernmost leg of US Highway 1 is referred to as the Highway that Goes to the Sea or the Overseas Highway. The route unrolls like a long ribbon in front of you with immense vistas of turquoise water and paler blue sky stretching endlessly on either side. Life starts to take on a different pace in this part of the USA. If you're seeking a laid-back, easy going holiday-you've got it. Flip-flops and cool shades are the order of the day here.
Key Largo's must-dos are a spot of diving and visit to John Pennekamp State Park, (one of only three underwater National Parks in the USA). A visit to the world's first underwater hotel and a stroll around the fascinating Wild Bird Centre are recommended too.
Days 5 - 6 : Key West
You're off to the most southern tip of the USA, Key West. You'll pass over endless bridges that seem to disappear into the sky and you'll be surrounded by scores of deserted islands in azure seas. Now don't rush this journey, take it slow - there's no rush in the Keys!
Key West definitely has a buzz about it. All the action largely revolves around Duval Street which runs from one side of the island to another. Packed with restaurants, bars and boutiques, this is one place you'll never run out of things to do. Enjoy a fun Pirate Walking Tour, an Echo Catamaran trip and the historic Conch Train. You won't get tired of strolling the quaint streets of Key West. Stop for a slice of the local speciality - Key Lime Pie or pop into Sloppy Joe's Bar (a favourite haunt of Ernest Hemmingway) and enjoy some good old people watching. Make sure to be in Mallory Square for the nightly Key West Sunset Celebrations.
Days 7 - 8 : Islamorada
It's time to head north again back to the upper Keys and Islamorada.
Islamorada is THE Sport Fishing Capital of the world, it's a Mecca for fishing fans who come to catch marlin, tuna and dolphin (the fish, not the mammal). If fishing isn't your interest, then there are plenty of other activities in this area to experience. We love the unique Aqua Ranch and The Turtle Hospital.
As it's the end of you holiday, we won't blame you if all you want to do is sit along the water and watch the world go by.
Day 9 : Head for home.
It's just a short drive today back to Miami for your flight home tonight. Unless, you're not ready! This itinerary can be tailored to include more of Florida like nearby Naples or Sarasota. Or, you can combine Florida with the Deep South - really anything is possible!
