Teddy Roosevelt described a train journey through Colorado as "the trip that bankrupts the English language."
Beginning and ending in Denver, this extraordinary itinerary makes a great circle of the Rockies and includes five remarkable train rides that fully justify President Roosevelt's enthusiasm.
We commence this railway journey in Denver, where a breathtaking first glimpse of the wonders of Colorado lies ahead aboard the Georgetown Loop Railroad. Moving on, the magnificent red rocks of Garden of the Gods and Pikes Peak are beautifully presented through in-depth tours.
Enjoy sights of the changing landscape as the tour moves west across the Continental Divide and take in the unique offerings of the cities of Durango and Alamosa. We are treated to little-seen views of the mountains, valleys and forests of Colorado aboard four more railways - the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad, the Rio Grande Scenic Railroad and the Royal Gorge Route Railroad - before returning to Denver. By train and motorcoach, your scenic journey through the Rockies is beyond all expectations.
Holiday departs June through October. Please call for your preferred date of departure.
Lunch and dinner is included today.
It's a visit this morning to Garden of the Gods, located at the base of Pikes Peak, this National Natural Landmark and popular park features stunning red rock geological formations. We tour with a local guide who will tell you about this amazing natural wonder.
Early afternoon, it’s a 14,115 feet ascend by motorcoach to the summit of Colorado’s mighty Pikes Peak Mountain. There’s several stops on the way to admire the panoramic views. Keep an eye out for elk, bears and mountains goats as we head towards the top. You’ve got 40 minutes once at the summit to enjoy the vistas, if you’re lucky, on a clear day you can see five states – Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas and New Mexico!
Overnight in Colorado Springs.
Breakfast is included today.
Today expect a scenery overload as we drive west over the Rockies through the San Juan Mountains and into the cowboy town of Durango!
Keep a look out for wildlife as we enjoy relaxing views of the parks and mountains of central Colorado while travelling over Ute Pass, the Continental Divide, and Trout Creek Pass to the base of the Sawatch Range.
After a leisurely lunch stop in Salida we note the changes in the landscape as our guide explains the history, culture, and geology of southern Colorado while we cross Poncha Pass and enter Luis Valley, skirting the southern edge of the San Juan Mountains.

Early this morning, the group drives to Chama, New Mexico where you'll board the longest narrow-gauge steam railway in North America: the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad.
The route follows the former Denver & Rio Grande San Juan Extension for 64 miles over the 3,058-metre Cumbres Pass through the heart of the San Juan Mountains and crosses the New Mexico/Colorado border 11 times. Past the divide, the train enters the deep canyon of the Rio de Los Pinos, and for 50 miles no paved road crosses the tracks.
There is a stop for lunch in Osier, after which the train's journey continues with a steep descent past Toltec Gorge. Your day concludes in Alamosa, where the evening is at your leisure.
