Pacific Northwest Coastal Drive
One of the highlights of any visit to the Pacific Northwest is the drive north from California through Oregon to Seattle, Washington (or vice versa of course). The rugged winding coastline and lush forests give way to long stretches of beaches and mountain peaks; you'll find almost everything along the Pacific Coast Scenic Byway.
Along the Oregon Coast section you will find rivers, lakes, trails, sand dunes, and amazing state parks to visit. The coastal terrain is a glorious combination of sandy beaches and towering rock cliffs. The first places you come to in Oregon will be Brookings, Gold Beach, Port Orford, Bandon and Coos Bay, all delightful small towns. Further north are Newport, Waldport, Yachats and Florence. These are four popular destinations on the Central Oregon Coast. People visiting this region will enjoy the Oregon Coast Aquarium, Heceta Head and the Sea Lion Caves. A short drive north you will find the Manzanita Area:The three towns of Manzanita, Nehalem and Wheeler are small communities in a relaxed setting and enjoy terrific beaches with fishing and kayaking on the bay. Seaside and Cannon Beach are among the most popular destinations along the Oregon Coast and they are the closest cities to Portland.
The Washington section of the Pacific Coast is a truly beautiful setting for a driving and relaxing vacation. Simply watching the wildlife, building sandcastles on the miles of unspoiled and virtually deserted beaches to fishing the fertile Pacific waters this pristine area is a real gem. A favourite destination for many northwest explorers is the Long Beach Peninsula. Westport is known for its outstanding fishing and Ocean Shores is a great spot for family holidays. Many people come to Hurricane Ridge for the views of the wildlife and a spectacular view of mountain peak vistas to the south - not to mention Port Angeles, the Strait of Juan de Fuca, Mt. Baker and Vancouver Islands to the north.
The forest provides a home for bear, deer, elk and other wildlife. Try hiking the rocky cliffs along the route, or you can ride on horseback along the trails and beaches. The area is also renowned for saltwater activities like fishing and kayaking. Visitors can try their hand at clamming and crabbing at Willapa.
