Day 1 New York - Albany

Corning

Ever since Henry Hudson came to call in 1609, the Hudson River Valley has been welcoming visitors to its spectacular landscapes, lush forests and soothing countenance. Back then, Henry thought he had discovered the Orient. Today you can discover the rich heritage and wonderful natural beauty of the area on a very pleasant drive up the river.

In the Lower Hudson Valley nearer Manhattan, rugged hills rise nearly 1,000 feet above the river.  Magnificent mansions with names like Kykuit, Lyndhurst, Philipsburg Manor and Van Cortlandt Manor perch on top. By the time the river reaches the upper valley, the landscape smoothes out a bit, yet the views are still as spectacular. Farms and estates occupied by the same families for centuries span the river banks.

Unknown to many, the Hudson River is also laden with several centuries of American history.  General George Washington moved his headquarters to Newburgh and his friend Benedict Arnold served as commander of West Point. Thomas Cole, leader of the Hudson Valley School of Painting arrived in 1850 to create his celebrated and inspiring paintings. Enjoy the landscape of this beautiful region. Discover the history and lore and you’ll find the experience getting even richer.

Day 2 Albany - Lake George

Lake George NY

In the natural paradise of the Adirondacks, nature takes centre stage. Noted for its sparkling lakes, majestic mountains and rushing streams, the Lake George region is the perfect place to get in tune with the outdoors, whether your preference is serene or extreme. There’s literally something for everyone.

In summer, visitors flock to the crystal blue waters for water sports, relaxation and just plain fun.  In autumn, the trees light up the countryside with hues of amber, yellow and crimson. You can enjoy the fall colours during a boat trip on the lake or on a scenic drive on meandering country roads.

The area is also well known for its history and heritage. American novelist James Fenimore Cooper made Cooper’s Cave in Glen Falls famous in his novel, The Last of the Mohicans. Fort William Henry, which served as a key location in both the French and Indian War and the Revolutionary War, is nearby.

The Hyde Collection in Glen Falls has works by Leonardo da Vinci, El Greco, Degas, Renoir and Cezanne. Many of Georgia O’Keefe’s paintings were of Lake George. Vice President Theodore Roosevelt learned in the town of North Creek that President McKinley had passed away and he that was now the President of the United States in the town of North Creek.

Day 3 Lake George - Lake Placid

lake Placid

The Adirondack Mountains of New York are both wild and civilized by turns. The scent of balsam on a forest trail, surrounded by serene quiet, gives way to a collection of towns, each with its own uniqueness.

The landscape of the Adirondacks witnessed the building of America when lumberjacks, miners and armies from France, Britain and Colonial America each had their impact on the region. Physicians later sent their patients to recover in the clear, mountain air. If you love the outdoors, 160 lakes and ponds with endless miles of trails await. In between, you’ll discover historic villages, intimate dining, museums, galleries and antiques.

A scenic drive up Prospect Mountain Memorial Highway delivers breathtaking views of Vermont’s Green Mountains, New Hampshire’s White Mountains, New York’s Adirondack High Peaks and on a very clear day, the Laurentians of Canada.

Quaint hamlets border pristine woodlands and lakes, mountains loom at the edges of golf courses. You can hike, paddle or drive far away from the sights and sounds of civilization and still be back in time for dinner.

Be sure to visit The Wild Center, the new Natural History Museum of the Adirondacks located at Tupper Lake. Rather than just viewing the animal inhabitants, the museum is much more interactive. The Adirondack Museum at Blue Mountain Lake is also a must see. Twenty buildings on 32 acres of grounds let you immerse yourself in Adirondack life.

Day 4 Lake Placid

aerial view Lake Placid NY

Set amidst the High Peaks of New York’s Adirondacks and surrounded by abundant lakes, rivers and forests, Lake Placid has been the focus on the world twice, during the 1932 and the 1980 Olympics.

Here, you can explore at leisure or be as active as you may wish. Over 200 miles of hiking trails form a network for walking through Adirondack Park. Learning the heritage of the Adirondacks dates back to the 1820s when visitors began seeking out the woodsmen for their backcountry skills and local lore.

If you want to be active, you can raft the rivers, fly over the Adirondacks, ride the Adirondack Scenic Railroad, go fly fishing, bungee jumping, horseback riding, mountain climbing, backpacking, bicycling or any one of the other many active opportunities that are available.

If you’d rather explore, pick up an Olympic Sites Passport, take a ski gondola to the top of one of the mountains, check out the galleries, boutiques, glass blowers and other shops, have a massage, visit the Adirondack Park Visitor Interpretive Center at Paul Smith’s, the Lake Placid Center for the Arts and meander over to Saranac Lake to check out the shops there.
