The International Dark Sky Places Program was founded in 2001 to encourage communities, parks and protected areas around the world to preserve and protect dark sites through responsible lighting policies and public education.

Not only does Utah have TEN recognised International Dark Sky Parks, more than anywhere in the world, but a further thirteen Dark Sky Places as well. Consistent reviews of communities, reserves and sanctuaries are adding more to the list all the time.
