Days 1-2 : Arrive Dallas
The Big D is brash, stylish and cosmopolitan, a city with a well earned reputation for fashion, luxury shopping and flashy prosperity. With one of the world’s most impressive collections of 20th Century architecture, its soaring modern skyscrapers and palatial mansions are anything but subtle. Yet Dallas as a city possesses a Southern grace, Texas style. Its districts, from soulful Deep Ellum to eclectic Victory Park, add range and texture to the Dallas urban experience. With world-class performing arts groups, a vibrant culinary culture and the Dallas Cowboys, the city is full of discoveries.
Days 3-4 : Houston
Distance: 240 miles
The highlight of Houston may well be Space Centre Houston the Disney-designed $70million entertainment and education project. It's an extraordinary journey into the past, present and future of NASA's manned space flight programme. See also Old Market Square, Sam Houston Historical Park and the amazing Galleria Mall.
Days 5-6 : San Antonio
Distance: 197 miles
San Antonio is a beautiful old city filled with colourful shops and sidewalk cafes. The city's dominant monument is the Alamo, the mission where many thousands lost their lives fighting for independence for Texas.
Understand its significance by first visiting the Alamo IMAX theatre in the downtown area where the story is recounted in graphic detail. Then journey out to the Alamo itself and contrast today's tranquillity with the bloodshed of yesteryear. Cross from here to the San Antonio Riverwalk and Rivercentre. There are cruises along the San Antonio River which take you through Paseo del Rio and its endless assortment of shops and restaurants. Other attractions include Sea World of Texas and the Hertzberg Circus Collection.
Days 7-8 : Bandera
Distance: 53 miles
Head for the hills today and Bandera County, here you are in ranch country.
We love The Mayan Dude Ranch, it gives you a feel of the real West with its rustic cabin accommodations all comfortably equipped for two to four persons with bathroom ensuite. There are activities for all the family - hayrides, tennis, swimming and country dancing among them.
Two hours riding in the gentle western style is included each day so you can enjoy the beauty of the hill country along trails set amid breathtaking scenery. Our rates also include three meals a day, but if you wish for a change of scene the town of Bandera is a short drive away and has a number of restaurants, cowboy bars and local attractions.
Day 9 : Fort Stockton
Distance: 276 miles
Leaving the big city Eastern Texas behind, the ranch stay provides a transition into the second part of our tour with its wide open spaces, rural communities and sparse populations.
Today's journey sets up our arrival into the Big Bend region at Fort Stockton. Arrive early to visit Historic Fort Stockton the frontier military fort established in 1858 and the National Register Historic District.
Days 10 - 11 : Big Bend National Park (Chisos Basin)
Distance: 155 miles
Big Bend National Park encompasses over 1,100 square miles of vast desert basins and majestic mountains rising from the desert floor. Your accommodation is in the heart of the park and you might wish to begin with the quarter mile self-guided Window View Trail at Chisos Basin.
A trip along the Ross Maxwell Scenic Drive will give you a taste of the Chihuahuan Desert and will lead you to the Rio Grande. There are scenic overlooks and exhibits all the way. A highlight of the trip is the short walk into the Santa Elena Canyon - one of the park's most beautiful natural wonders.
Days 12-13 : Alpine
Distance: 122 miles
Linger today in the National Park taking the opportunity to explore on foot some of the many easy walks and roadside exhibits before making your way north to the attractive town of Alpine.
Set at an altitude of almost a mile above sea level, Alpine enjoys low humidity and cool summer nights and provides a base from which to explore Fort Davis where through time Indians, bandits, soldiers and ranchers have created a community rich in history and culture. Alternatively, at the McDonald Observatory you can see one of the world's major astronomy research facilities and view exhibits and an orientation video
Day 14 : Abilene
Distance: 335 miles
Today we travel north and west via Fort Davis and the Barilla Mountains to Abilene, as the old song has it, the prettiest town that I've ever seen. This plains city boasts the Grace Cultural Centre’s art, children's and historical museums and Buffalo Gap Historic Village - 19 buildings representing local life and architecture of yesterday.
Day 15 : Dallas
Distance: 155 miles
Your last day and a straightforward drive east along Interstate 20 back to Dallas Fort Worth for your flight back to the UK. However, there is so much more to explore in Texas so why not extend your stay and enjoy some time relaxing on the beaches of Corpus Christi or Galveston?
