A 45 minute drive from Rapid City and a 15 minute drive from Custer is where the creation of the world’s largest sculpture begun in 1948 by Boston born artist Korczak Ziolkowski. His work continues today at Crazy Horse Memorial.
The dimensions are staggering. A mountain sized statue of an Indian man and a spirited war-horse that’s as long as a cruise ship and taller than a 60-story skyscraper. Korczak died in 1982 but his family continue on with his work.
Crazy Horse is long from finished but a visit to the Memorial will leave you with lasting memories, be sure to watch the film on the history of Crazy Horse, it will make the hairs on your arm stand up. Don’t be put off by pictures of Crazy Horse you’ll see, nothing will prepare you for the sculpture itself, and dare we say it, we think it’s more impressive than Mount Rushmore…
