The Smokejumper Center is the largest smokejumping base in the world. Smokejumpers are elite, highly trained firefighters who fight forest fires in remote areas throughout the country.
In order to access these remote forest fires, smokejumpers parachute out of an airplane. They then spend days or weeks in the woods putting the fires out before hiking back to civilisation. Smokejumping is highly physical and takes a serious degree of grit and determination.
Missoula has a state-of-the-art Visitor's Center with interactive materials and videos. There is an hour long free tour which takes groups into the smokejumper base where one can see smokejumpers repairing and packing parachutes, packing their cargo or getting ready for a fire jump.
