Oregon has become a hotbed for film production in recent years and the Oregon Film Trail gives visitors an opportunity to explore some of the most iconic cinematic locations throughout the state. From lush forests and rugged coastlines to vibrant cities and small towns, the trail offers stunning scenery with peeks into pop culture. With more than thirty locations and some of Hollywood's biggest films - from Academy Award winners like One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest to cult classics like The Goonies - it's an ideal film buff meets nature lover holiday.

Laid-back, friendly and wonderfully eclectic – you're bound to adore Portland. Known as the ‘City of Roses,’ with 92,000 acres of green space, they are proud of their eco-friendly status and of the city's endless biking and walking trails.
Be sure to grab a coffee at Oblique Coffee Roasters and visit the Keep Portland Weird mural. No stop in Portland would be complete without a visit to Next Level Pinball Shop & Museum where you can play on over 400 different pinball machines.

To start the movie locations portion of the itinerary, head to Astoria and work your way down the coast, then head inland to visit the other stops on the film trail.
On the way to Astoria stop off in the picturesque St Helens, and visit the trail marker for Twilight (1) where much of the movie was filmed. Once in Astoria, visit the Oregon Film Museum to see where the film trail officially starts and the displays of memorabilia from the many films and TV shows set in Oregon.

Be sure to visit nearby Fort Stevens State Park and see the marker for Free Willy (5).

Head South to the charming city of Cannon Beach, one of the most popular filming destinations in the state.
Explore Indian Beach within Ecola State Park and trail markers for Point Break (6) and The Goonies (7).
This beach was also used as the backdrop to scenes from Twilight.

Head down the coast and be sure to drive the Three Capes Scenic Loop with views of the Pacific and forested coastal mountains. Stop off in Depoe Bay and visit the harbour where One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest was filmed (8). In Newport, visit the Yaquina Head Lighthouse and the Oregon Coast Aquarium where the orca that starred in Free Willy lived for many years.
After arriving in Florence, visit the Sea Lion Caves where an elevator descends 208 feet to a viewpoint offering a view of the wild Steller and California sea lions.
Distance: 126 miles
From Florence, take a short detour south to the sweet city of Cottage Grove and visit the trail makers for The General (9), Animal House (10) and Stand by Me (11).
Head north again to Eugene, home of the University of Oregon and where Nike was founded. Eugene is another hot spot for filming including Animal House, Wild and Stand by Me to name a few.
Continue on to Salem with a stop in the charming town of Brownsville - first stop the Brownsville Historic Pioneer Museum for a free walking tour map of Stand By Me (12) film locations.
On to Salem and the fascinating Oregon State Hospital Museum of Mental Health where One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest (13) was filmed and also the trail maker for the Oregon Department of Corrections (14) where Jack Nicholson’s character was dropped off.
Distance: 118 miles
First stop on your way is Silver Falls State Park – Oregon’s largest state park and the crown jewel of the state park system. It's also a trail marker for Twilight (15).
Continue on to Mount Hood and see the Timberline Lodge which served as the exterior for Stanley Kubrick’s The Shinning. Spend some time enjoying Mount Hood and hike the Pacific Crest Trail where the novel Wild and the film of the same name, starring Reese Witherspoon, was set and filmed.
