Destination - Missouri and Route 66
The "Show Me State" of Missouri will have some of the most scenic views of the Mother Road on your Route 66 holiday, it also has dozens of vintage icons along the old highway, many of which can still be visited today.
From the Mississippi River in St. Louis, through the bluffs and rolling hills of central Missouri, to the plateau region beginning at Springfield and ending at the Kansas border, Missouri's 300-odd-mile-journey provides a multitude of picturesque scenes along old Route 66.
A must-do on any Route 66 trip in Missouri is the Meramec Caverns which was once used by outlaw Jessie James as a hideout and offers a view of the natural formations of this underground wonder.. Learn how an ancient limestone "Wine Table" and an entire 7-story mansion were built...all underground. On tour you will see both the rarest and largest cave formations in the world.
Stop at Lebanon, Missouri and you'll find the
Route 66 Museum and Research Center
inside the Lebanon-Laclede Co. Library. The museum features recreations of a 1950s gas station, a diner, and includes a collection of Route 66 books and a rotating display of antique cars.
On leaving Missouri on your Route 66 fly-drive and heading for the short section of Route 66 that passes through adjoining Kansas, be sure to stop at the pretty town of Carthage.
