In the most haunted hotel in Boston – The Omni Parker House . It is said that the ghost of the original owner (Harvey Parker) continues to roam the halls of the hotel. Salem offers visitors a Halloween experience all year round. The city of Salem on the north coast of Massachusetts is famous for the 1692 witch trials. Visitors can find out more about these twenty innocent individuals, who were executed due to supposedly being in pact with the Devil, at the Salem Witch Museum and experience the performance that relives the story at the Witch Dungeon Museum . Visitors can also visit the home of the judge, Jonathan Corwin at the Witch House . How to see the Horsetail Firefall, Yosemite -as featured in the Sunday Times

“Crazy as it sounds, the original Yosemite Firefall was exactly that. It started in 1872, when Fred and John McCauley — the sons of a local hotelier — would lead mules laden with firewood to the top of Glacier Point, in Yosemite National Park. Once they’d got a big fire going, they’d kick the glowing embers over the edge of the 3,000 ft cliff, thrilling the tourists down in the valley.

The feast of pyromania caused huge damage, and in 1968 the authorities finally put an end to it. But it’s been replaced by a phenomenon that’s even more spectacular, and 100% natural. Every year, in the last two weeks of February, the setting sun hits the 1,570 ft Horsetail Fall at exactly the right angle to turn it into what appears to be a cataract of orange fire. It looks magical, but if you’re going to see it, the circumstances must be just right. First, there must be enough snow on the top to provide the melt water to feed the falls (which is why the firefall doesn’t occur in October, when the sun is at the same angle). Second, the sky must be clear in the west. Even if these conditions are met, this natural wonder lasts for only 10 minutes — but it’s 10 minutes you won’t forget.

Horsetail Firefall is so popular — especially with photographers — that if you want to see it next year, you’ll need to book your accommodation now. A seven-day fly-drive, spending five nights at the Yosemite View Lodge hotel and one in San Francisco, starts at £995pp, including flights and car hire. For further details contact Bon Voyage on 0800 316 0194”

Spaces are limited with two groups of only eight guests being available. Each group will be led by an expert guide and transported in luxurious Mercedes Sprinter Vans. The tour will start and end in Portland.

After the first two nights in Portland at the Modera Hotel, travellers will be collected on the morning of day three and transported in style to the Oregon coast. On the way visitors will stretch their legs at one of Oregon’s most spectacular viewing points, Fcola State Park, before continuing along the coast to the scenic Three Capes Loop and Cape Kiwanda, with time to climb the dunes. The small group will then spend two nights at Salishan Spa and Golf Resort.

The next morning, guests are free to relax and enjoy the hotel’s wide variety of facilities before witnessing the momentous occasion from the hotel grounds. Following the eclipse, the group will head off on a whale-watching boat tour. There’s then free time to explore the quaint downtown of Newport and see the sea lions on the floating docks, before enjoying a hosted meal showcasing the abundance of delicious local seafood.

En route back to Portland on day five, the tour will stop at Willamette Valley, known for its crisp white wines and subtle pinot noirs, before spending the final night in Portland.

Don’t miss out:

The 5 night/6 day tour costs from £3,599 per person and includes direct return flights with Virgin Atlantic, three nights at the Modera Hotel in Portland, two nights at Salishan Spa and Golf Resort, luxury transportation from and back to Portland, and meals as detailed in itinerary.
