Day 1 - 2 : Los Angeles
Begin your Grand West fly-drive holiday in Los Angeles. Here you'll have time to check out Santa Monica, Venice or Muscle Beach, visit the swanky shops along Rodeo Drive or stroll along the Stars' Walk of Fame. A visit to Universal Studios is a must-do for all movie fans, and of course, a photo opportunity beneath the iconic Hollywood sign.
Day 3 - 4 : Los Angeles - San Diego
Distance: 121 miles
When talk turns to near-perfect year-round climates, Perth and Cape Town may have their followers but our vote goes to San Diego. The average daily high temperature does not fall below 65f at any time of the year, neither does it rise above 80f. Humidity is low and the sunshine average is around 70f. It's hardly surprising that the lifestyle here is based around outdoor activities. There are 70 miles of coastline beaches, it's a sailing mecca and the area boasts some 80 golf courses.
San Diego is California's second largest city, the state's oldest and the birthplace of all that is Californian. Many of its key attractions are within a short distance of lively downtown San Diego's attractive bayfront area. Don't just think of this region as a fabulous beach destination, the activities go way beyond that. There is even the chance for a day trip to Tijuana, Mexico from San Diego.
Day 5 - 6 : San Diego - Palm Springs
Distance: 141 miles
Located in the Coachella Valley at the foot of the San Jacinto Mountains, the chic resort of Palm Springs truly is a virtual oasis, sheltered on three sides by mountain ranges and bordered to the east by the great Colorado-Sonoran Desert.
Here you'll find designer shopping, endless golf courses, top class shows, a wide choice of eateries (we love the Mexican food here) and world class hotels and resorts all set against an amazing backdrop. If you can plan your visit to Palm Springs between May-October, you can take advantage of incredible prices in stunning 4/5 star hotels. From Palm Springs Bon Voyage can pre-book a jeep adventure into the desert and along the San Andreas fault.
Day 7 - 8 : Palm Springs - Las Vegas
Distance: 280 miles
Choice of accommodation for your Las Vegas stay is simply not an issue. 17 of the 20 biggest hotels in the US are here. We aren’t talking your standard Holiday Inn. Las Vegas holiday hotels are destinations in their own right. From a replica of an ancient Egyptian pyramid at Luxor, to the Eiffel Tower at Paris, you can easily spend days of your holiday in Las Vegas just wondering up and down the strip.
Vegas is also a great base from which to explore the Grand Canyon, Hoover Dam, Lake Mead and the incredible Valley of the Fire. Speak to Bon Voyage about the options available to you here.
Day 9 : Las Vegas - Mammoth Lakes
Distance: 330 miles
From Las Vegas, drive through the Nevada desert across wonderful, eerie Death Valley and into the eastern foothills of the Sierra Nevadas. Here, tucked just beneath Yosemite National Park, you'll encounter the beautiful Mammoth Lakes region, a year-round celebration of all that is outdoorsy.
It's a place of rugged beauty, where giant sawtooth mountains drop into vast deserts of the Great Basin. In winter it provides the finest skiing and snowboarding in California. Once the snow melts, that's when the fun begins, and the incredible scenery emerges.
Day 10 - 11 : Mammoth Lakes - Yosemite National Park (eastern entrance)
Distance: 100 miles
Continue to climb through the Sierras and into Yosemite National Park via the Tioga Pass. Take all day to cross the pass marvelling at the waterfalls, giant Redwoods, lakes and meadows before arriving at your accommodation at the western edge of the park.
Day 12 - 14 : Yosemite National Park - San Francisco
Distance: 190 miles
In contrast to many modern American cities, San Francisco is as much a city for discovering on foot as London or Paris.
Perched on 43 hills, everybody’s favourite city has the most diverse neighbourhoods. Try North Beach settled by the Italians and still home to pasta restaurants and cappuccino bars. Or stumble upon beatnik and flower power haunts dating back to the 50s and 60s including Haight Ashbury, the spiritual home of 1967's Summer of Love. Then there's the lively Mission District, favoured by Latin Americans and Japantown with its sushi bars, Japanese baths and karaoke lounges. And don't miss San Francisco's Chinatown, the largest outside Asia.
When your feet have had enough hop aboard a cable car to vibrant Fisherman’s Wharf and then the true heart of the city, Union Square. San Francisco’s charms are great and small. You won’t want to miss Golden Gate Park, The Palace of Fine Arts, a cable car ride over Nob Hill or views of the thundering Pacific from the cliffs of Lincoln Park.
Bon Voyage can pre-book many excursions for you whilst in San Francisco such as Alcatraz, walking tours of Chinatown, Bay Cruises, helicopter trips and Bike The Bridge. Perhaps you would like to extend this tour further? Why not take a flight to one of the beautiful Hawiian Islands for a relaxing break before you head home?
