The Florida Aquarium, located in Tampa, provides the ideal chance to get up close to Florida’s aquatic animals and ecosystems, as well as others from around the world. And, you can feel good about it whilst you are learning as The Florida Aquarium is strenuously working to protect and restore the blue planet on many conservation fronts. That includes research and rescue efforts that have helped restore Florida’s sea turtle and coral populations
Our oceans and seas are under threat from many complex issues….pollution, climate change, overfishing….to name a few. The Florida Aquarium is doing its part in Tampa Bay, the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean. The aquarium’s Animal Response Team works to protect endangered marine life, and restore animal species and their habitats
The Florida Aquarium focuses on three animals which play huge roles in Florida’s waters:
- Sea turtles - because they are barometers of marine health
- Sharks - because they are essential top-down managers of marine ecosystems
- Coral - because they are building blocks of marine habitats and oxygen-giving marine organisms
The Florida Aquarium also rescues injured birds, supports swallow-tailed kite population research and is involved in conservation programs for threatened and endangered animals within their collection including penguins and lemurs.
