Prospectors came from all over the world in 1848 after James Marshall turned up a gold nugget whilst building a sawmill. Soon the word was out and the mill in the Sierra Nevada foothills became one of the most historically significant sites in the country. Over 160 years later "The Gold Rush" is still known as one of the greatest mass movements of people in history, and nowadays holidays to Sacramento are bringing a new goldrush.
Today you can explore the Gold Country from cosmopolitan Sacramento, 90 miles east of San Francisco. This lively state capital is a joy to stroll around. Visit the handsome Capitol building and Governor’s Mansion or head for Sacramento State Historic Park and view the largest collection of Gold Rush-era buildings west of the Mississippi.
Head to Old Sacramento, a historically preserved district covering six blocks. Stop for lunch on the Delta King Riverboat and don’t miss The California State Railroad Museum with its lavishly restored trains and fascinating exhibits.
As you set off to explore the picturesque surrounding Gold Country, you’ll discover hidden gems like Nevada City with it’s Victorian homes and Jamestown, one of the settings for Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. Take a stage coach rides through Columbia State Park and visit some of the small and friendly wineries.
