Sixty miles south of Billings at the foot of the awesome Beartooth Mountians lies the atmospheric village of Red Lodge. It was originally founded to dig coal for the transcontinental railroads but in 1924 it faced extinction when its largest coal mine closed.
Luckily, its future was secured by the construction of the 65 mile Beartooth Scenic Highway to Cooke City at the north-eastern entrance to Yellowstone National Park. This incredible route provides you with a real top-of-the-world feel with its tight pigtail turns, steep grades and stunning overlooks.
This quaint, historic, mountain village offers you true western hospitality and is a great gateway to Yellowstone National Park via the Beartooth Highway.
