Palm Beach is a barrier island, separated from the mainland by the Lake Worth Lagoon. Renowned for glitzy estates and hotels – thanks are due to Henry Morrison Flagler who coined the area 'America's First Resort.' The railroad tycoon, who made Palm Beach accessible via his Florida East Coat Railway, also built two of the area’s most opulent hotels – both of which opened in the late 1800s. The Breakers Palm Beach still operates today and is a true Palm Beach landmark.
Of course, it wouldn’t be Palm Beach without the sand and the two public beaches are pristine thanks to the locals who keep it clean and tidy. With all upmarket destinations, shopping is paramount and the best here is found on Florida’s own ‘Rodeo Drive’ - Worth Avenue. Lined with upscale boutiques, galleries and restaurants – it’s the perfect place for a mooch and people watching. Also, be sure to visit the museum dedicated to the man who made it all possible – the Henry Morrison Flagler Museum and his Gilded Age mansion – Whitehall.
