The Outer Banks are a 130-mile stretch of barrier islands just off the coast of North Carolina, connected by short and scenic ferry crossings. Beautifully natural, they've been formed by a millennia of wind, water and sand blown from the Atlantic Ocean. The area boasts more than 100 miles of uncrowded beaches on islands a mile wide, most protected from development, and preserved solely for recreation and wildlife. Stroll around quaint seaside hamlets and fishing villages exploring tiny islands and finishing with the catch of the day at sunset. This slice of America is ideal for a slow paced, beachy holiday.
But it's not all about sand and water. Discover historical sites dating back to 1587 with the arrival of English colonists and the mystery surrounding ‘The Lost Colony.' Aviation buffs will want to visit Kill Devil Hills - the site of the Wright brothers' first controlled, powered airplane flight in 1903. Interesting, at the time of the flight, the town did not exist! Kitty Hawk, popularly noted as the site of the famous flights, is four miles north and the nearest settlement at the time. No trip to The Outer Banks would be complete without clambering up towering lighthouses, kite boarding on sand dunes or learning all about the escapades of North Carolina’s pirates, including the legendary Blackbeard.
There are all types of accommodation available throughout the area, but the you can't beat the space and flexibility of a private rental home. Bon Voyage has secured options in two areas.
At the northern tip, Corolla is upscale and quiet. It’s sought after for both its seclusion and its abundance of quirky shops and dining options. The second location is Kill Devil Hills, the oldest official town on the Outer Banks. It is also one of the most popular as its central location is ideal for myriad attractions, activities, shops and restaurants. We'd recommend a minimum of three nights, but you can easily spend a week with plenty to keep you busy.
