Durango in south-west Colorado, was founded in 1880 as a rail junction for the gold-rush community of Silverton, 45 miles further north.
Today the Durango and Silverton Railroad still runs along this spectacular route. If you aren't interested in trains, enjoy the arty south-west feel to the place. Stroll along its long, wide historic main street lined with galleries and neat stores. Be sure to pop your head into the ornate, Victorian Strater Hotel, little here has changed.
The fast flowing Animas river runs through Durango bringing the excitement of white water rafting to every doorstep, experience an exhilarating rafting trip or just a quiet stroll along the river path. Fancy a taste of the West? Take a stagecoach ride, visit the rodeo or enjoy a beer in one of the western bars.
