Known as the polar bear capital of the world, Churchill is a frontier town on the shores of the Hudson Bay. To protect its wildlife the area can only be reached by air or train. The community focuses on maintaining a normal way of life in extreme conditions but happily including visitors. Hotels, restaurants, bars and shops are all in walking distance within the town and the Eskimo Museum and Parks Canada at the railway station have fascinating exhibits about the wildlife, history, culture and lifestyle of this arctic area.
In the summer months 60,000 Beluga whales
come into the Churchill River. Known as
the ‘sea canaries’ because of their chirping and other vocals makes this
friendly marine mammal happy to follow boats and play around those in kayaks or
snorkelling.
Polar bears can be seen summer and winter
though the prime viewing time is October and November when the bears move from
their summer habitat to Churchill where the ice forms first in the Hudson Bay.
