The Meramec Caverns, Route 66- Missouri
The Meramec Caverns in Stanton, Missouri have been welcoming visitors to cool off in their caverns since 1935. It's this 7.4 km cave systems that actually invented the bumper sticker, since it's the marketing method they used to promote the caverns! Legend has it that Jesse James used these caverns as a hideout and crawled along the underground river to make his hasty retreat through the "back door". It's an interesting stop along your Route 66 trip.
