Arlington should be considered as part of your Washington DC stay as this is where the capital and Virginia are divided only by the width of the Potomac River. Depending on who you ask, Arlington is either the biggest small town – or the smallest big city – you’ll ever visit. There is a mix of soaring high-rises and turn-of-the-century homes, high-end shopping and funky boutiques, five-star dining and neighbourhood pizza places.
Arlington was once part of the original Federal City designed by Pierre L’Enfant and is home to some of the nation’s most impressive and monuments and memorials. These include Arlington House – The Robert E. Lee Memorial, Arlington National Cemetery - the final resting place for America’s heroes, and the Marine Corps War Memorial where the renowned Iwo Jima bronze sculpture is the focal point.
