Places to stay
Island Inn was established in 1885. It began as the home of Will and Harriet Matthews and their four children who traded in the harsher climate of the north for the more temperate, year round weather of Sanibel Island. Constantly entertaining friends and relatives from the north who flocked to visit, the Matthews decided to turn their home into a boarding house. And from this grew the gracious tradition of the historic Island Inn that now hosts families and friends from around the world.
Whether you stay in a hotel-style room in one of the lodges or in a darling Sanibel Island cottage, Island Inn’s horseshoe configuration provides a wonderful sense of closeness and community while maintaining ample privacy. Afterall, there are only 49 units here and they are spread over 10 tropical acres overlooking a private beach.
You'll enjoy dining at Traditions On The Beach, a beach-chic eatery with a fabulous menu and terrific views over the Gilf of Mexico. Free continental breakfast is served here for guests staying at the Island Inn.
At the Island Inn, the friendly staff will suggest day trips for you from Segway Tours to a Safari through the Everglades. If you are looking for something less energetic, relax by the heated pool, try a spot of fishing, go for a gentle bike ride, or enjoy shelling on the unspoiled Sanibel shoreline.
Guests that stay at the Inn love to enjoy a BBQ in the grounds under the starry skies at night.
