USA Holidays
Historic Philadelphia
It may not be the oldest, but it certainly is the most historically significant city in the US and a must-visit for American history buffs.
Independence National Historical Park, home of the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall, is where the history lesson stars. Both the Declaration of Independence and the US Constitution were drafted and signed here. Free guided tours of Independence Hall are offered daily.
Christ Church, with its 196-feet high steeple, is one of the most visible landmarks of the city and one of America's most historic churches. The church was built between 1727 and 1754 in the reign of George II. Many of America’s founding fathers worshiped here including Benjamin Franklin and George Washington. The Church's adjacent burial ground is the resting place of many famous individuals including Benjamin Franklin and five signers of the Declaration of Independence.
Other notable places of interest include the Betsy Ross House, seamstress of the first American flag; the historic houses of Society Hill; Philadelphia Zoo – the first in the US – set amid 42 acres of Victorian gardens; Eastern State Penitentiary one of the most expensive American buildings of its day and in the late 1800’s one of the most famous prisons in the world; and the Edgar Allan Poe House.
