Golf Holidays in North Carolina

Pinehurst Golf image

North Carolina has become a mecca for fans of golf. Perhaps because legendary golf course designer Donald Ross, considered by many  as the most influential architect of the modern era, created nearly four dozen of his best layouts across the state. Or perhaps it has more to do with the sheer variety of the terrain: From the coast through the flatlands to the mountains, great golf courses are to be found wherever you travel.

Grove Park Inn & Golf Course

The Grove Park Inn in the mountain region of Asheville features one of Ross’ courses where many of the game’s greats, including Nicklaus, Trevino and Player, have played. Ever since Massachusetts’ businessman James Walker Tufts bought 5,000 acres of scrubby pines in 1895 and turned it into one of the world’s great resorts, Pinehurst has been the jewel of the state’s golf destinations. Pinehurst now features eight top courses, including Ross’s “No. 2” masterpiece.

Blad Head Island Golf course

Coastal golf is no less stunning in North Carolina. Bald Head Island Club is a gem, its George Cobb-designed course winding through maritime forests and around freshwater lagoons. The Brunswick Islands alone boast more than 30 courses.

Sun Valley Golf Course N Carolina

Tiger Woods chose North Carolina to build his first US golf course. Woods’ “The Cliffs at High Carolina” will be located east of Asheville in Swannanoa.
