Telluride and Ouray Holidays

Tex Main Street

"Two of my most favourite mountain getaways in the USA are the historic towns of Ouray (in an area rightly known as the Switzerland of America) and nearby home of the stars, Telluride.

One sunny day in June I was travelling down the scenic Million Dollar Highway to Silverton when I came across the cosy town of Ouray. Set in a truly verdant valley with the Box Canyon Falls at one end of the street and the soothing Ouray Hot Springs at the other, I decided this was a place worth spending some time.

I did something I normally never do, I hired a bike from the local shop and set off exploring the area. Boy, did I both surprise and enjoy myself.  Slightly saddle sore after my little excursion, I decided to do something else I never do! Yes, you've guessed it, I jumped into my swimming costume and bathed with the locals in the relaxing hot springs. Any feelings of self consciousness were soon gone, laying there staring up into the incredible mountains, I actually did truly feel at peace...

It was in the hot springs that I heard about Telluride, you simply must go there, I was told by a rather large American. So I did.

A short back- track and I was on my way!

Telluride, is a delight, a former mining village, whose main high street is listed as a National Historic District with low slung buildings on either side leading up to one of the most stupendous mountain views in the Rockies.

The village was briefly the home in the 1880's to Butch Cassidy who robbed his first bank here...nowadays Tom Cruise, Ralph Lauren and the likes, call it home."

Things to see and do

  • Silverton Railway

    Durango to Silverton Railway

The historic Durango to Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad is simply a must-do on any visit to Colorado. The line was constructed to haul silver and gold between the two towns in the 1880’s, but the passengers soon realised it was the view that was precious.

  • Black Canyon

Black Canyon of Gunnison National Park

Most rivers of the Southwest cut through relatively soft sedimentary rock, forming canyons that tend to be quite wide, colourful and stepped - descending in a series of cliffs and ledges through layers of differing hardness.

  • CO Mesa Verde.jpg

    Mese Verde National Park

Mesa Verde, Spanish for green table, offers a spectacular look into the lives of the Ancestral Pueblo people who made it their home for over 700 years, from A.D. 600 to A.D. 1300. Today, the park protects over 4,000 known archaeological sites, including 600 cliff dwellings. These sites are some of the most notable and best preserved in the United States.
