Jerome was a copper mining camp, growing from a settlement of tents to a roaring mining community. But after four disastrous fires,The Depression and the end of World War II, the thriving population of 15,000 decreased to only 100. The hardy souls left promoted Jerome as a historic ghost town and in 1967 Jerome was designated a National Historic District by the federal government. Today the mines are silent and Jerome has become the largest ghost town in America.
