Mount Rainier National Park
Located 54 miles south east of Seattle, Mount Rainier National Park encompasses 235,625 acres, ranging in elevation from 1,610 feet to 14,410 feet above sea level. The "Mountain", as it is called by locals, is an active volcano covered by snow and ice and surrounded by ancient forests and wildflower meadows.
On days of exceptional clarity, it can be seen from as far as Portland, Oregon - over 100 miles away.
Every year some 2 million people visit Mount Ranier, most driving up twisting mountain roads to view the sublime natural scenery and the stunning summit cone. For those seeking a little more hands-on experience even a short hike will uncover wilderness of huge, ancient trees, alpine glades,ice-cold, mountain streams and ancient glaciers.
Mount Rainier last erupted some 150 years ago.
