Oahu Insider Tip #5

Hawaii Maui waterfall

Did you know that Diamond Head Crater, one of Hawaii's most famous landmarks and one of Oahu's most popular hikes became known as Diamond Head after 19th century British sailors thought they discovered diamonds on its slopes?

This towering extinct volcano tuff cone that the ancient Hawaiians called Le‘ahi (brow of the tuna) was used as a military lookout in the early 1900's. Take the opportunity to hike Diamond Head and you'll pass through its underground tunnels and military bunkers. The view from the top of Diamond Head over Waikiki Beach is impressive and staggeringly beautiful at sunset and sunrise.

There are unique and breathtaking hikes all around the island of Oahu from beautiful easy going beachside trails along the Leeward coasts, lush rainforest trails to hidden waterfalls in the verdant valleys of Makiki or Manoa. Enjoy a spot of whale watching from the trails at Makapuu Point Lighthouse.

Diamond Head is a short and inexpensive bus ride from Waikiki Beach.
