Austin’s Music Scene
So how exactly did Austin become known as the “Live Music Capital of the World”? The city’s slogan became official in 1991, after it was discovered that Austin had more live music venues per capita than Nashville, New York City, Los Angeles and anywhere else. Today, the city is home to some 200 which means you can catch a show any day of the week, at almost any time. From Sixth Street to the Red River and Warehouse Districts, the East Side to South Lamar, you won’t be disappointed. And music fans should also visit the Stevie Ray Vaughan Memorial.
Plan on visiting 6th street on one evening of your visit. This historic street in downtown Austin is lined with famous live music clubs, restaurants and clubs. The club area runs to Congress Avenue. Live bands usually start playing around 9 p.m., so plan on staying late!
Austin plays host to two amazing music festivals:
Austin City Limits: Held every September, the ACL Music Festival brings thousands of visitors to Austin's Zilker Park and welcomes more than 100 bands from around the world.
South by South West (SXSW): Started as a small music festival more than twenty years ago, every March SXSW hosts the best in music and film. It features 1,800 bands on 80 stages from around the globe, right in the heart of downtown Austin.
