Augusta is the state capital of Maine and where Plymouth colonists established a fur trading post in 1628.  Tour the Capitol planned by noted architect Charles Bulfinch, the fine Maine State museum and the restored buildings of Fort Western dating back to 1754.  The Kennebunk River Trail is a 1.5 mile walk through a tranquil wooded estate on the western shore of the river where you'll find both man-made and natural shrines for contemplation.
